Following a period as stage design assistant at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg, where Martin Kukulies worked among others with Goetz Loepelmann, Rouben Ter-Arutunian and Johannes Grützke in productions by Peter Zadek, he took up assignments with Hans Man in’t Veld of the Werktheater Amsterdam, Matthias Langhoff, and the film producer Max Färberböck. Since 1986  Martin Kukulies has been a freelance stage designer and the list of his working venues is long, taking in the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg, the Maxim Gorki Theater Berlin, Staatsschauspiel Dresden, the Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen, Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf, Staatstheater Stuttgart, Burgtheater Wien, Volkstheater Wien, Theater Basel and the Schauspielhaus Zürich, to name but some. He has designed a large array of sets for productions by Klaus Weise, Harald Clemen, Johannes Lepper and Lore Stefanek. Martin Kukulies has been a Visiting Professor for Stage Design at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Maastricht/Niederlande since 2004.
