2021 Handel Festival
A GREAT SUCCESS WITH CLEAR MANDATES +++ SCHÄFSMEIER SUMS UP THE CENTENARY IN POSITIVE TERMS
“Our centenary has run its course. In itself a small miracle in light of the ongoing, strained pandemic situation. All the more reason to be happy that our expectations were even surpassed,” says Jochen Schäfsmeier, the new Managing Director of the Göttingen International Handel Festival.
The figures prove him right: 96.4% capacity for the Festival Opera Rodelinda for a total of five performances at the Deutsches Theater and even maximum attendance for the seven chamber concerts in Göttingen, Duderstadt, Hanover and Hann. Münden. A total of around 4,100 visitors witnessed the events: a well-deserved farewell for Laurence Cummings and Tobias Wolff, the longstanding management team of the Göttingen Handel Festival.
Amidst all the euphoria, both the Lokhalle Göttingen and the surrounding region – as mandatory, appealing venues – are to be anchored even more firmly in the awareness of international audiences. And so, with optimism and enthusiasm, we are all able to look forward to the upcoming Festival from May 12-22, 2022, which will take place under new artistic direction.
Digital exhibition on Handel
Since May 25, Die Gesänge der Ptolemäer (The Songs of the Ptolemies), a digital exhibition created by the Department for Egyptology and Coptology at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, has been "sounding out". With the subtitle, "Perception of Egypt in the operas of George Frideric Handel", it is yet another highlight worth viewing that will also help shorten the wait until September for you and us both. The opening video is now available on @haendelfest, the YouTube channel of the Göttingen International Handel Festival.
