Three Artistic Directors of the Göttingen International Handel Festival in conversation / NDR broadcasts operas
– Press release – Göttingen, February 19, 2021
On February 23 2021, the Göttingen International Handel Festival will celebrate Handel's anniversary together with the public. To mark the occasion, Managing Director Tobias Wolff invites you to a live talk with the three conductors Nicholas McGegan, Laurence Cummings and George Petrou at 19:00 (CET). This talk can be viewed live on our YouTube channel "haendelfest".
Nicholas McGegan was Artistic Director of the Göttingen International Handel Festival from 1991 to 2011 and Artistic Director of the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra for 34 years until 2020. In 2012, the current Artistic Director Laurence Cummings took over. He is also Artistic Director of the London Handel Festival and the Orquestra Barocca Casa da Musica Porto. In 2021, he will assume the directorship of the prestigious Academy of Ancient Music. This year, Cummings will serve as Artistic Director of the Festival for the last time, after which he will hand over the reins to George Petrou. As director of the Greek ensemble Armonia Atenea, Petrou has already performed on the major concert stages throughout Europe and has been honoured with numerous awards for his recordings.
Tobias Wolff will speak with the three Artistic Directors about Handel, Göttingen and this year's edition of the Festival.
The public also has the opportunity to enjoy another "present" on Handel's anniversary in cooperation with NDR-Kultur: On their website www.ndr.de/ndrkultur/ it is possible until February 22, 2022 to revisit operas of the International Handel Festival from the past 10 years. And as part of this, an introduction to each of these operas by Tobias Wolff will be available on the Festival's YouTube channel over the course of the next few months.
