The Göttinger Symphonieorchester refers back to its own season opener, bridging the gap between last year’s Festival and the current one: last year they performed Handel’s Concerto grosso in B-flat major (HWV 325); this year it will be performed in Arnold Schoenberg’s arrangement from 1933. With the Concerto for String Quartet and Orchestra after Handel: Concerto grosso, op.6 No.7, the “Underappreciated” (J. Kaiser) pays homage to the work while also opening up new horizons: “In terms of composition, I have certainly ventured further than Brahms or Mozart in their arrangements of Handel”, writes the twelve-tone composer. He did not limit himself to “eliminating uninteresting figural work and enhancing the movements, but [...] shifted freely and independently and, utilizing that which was usable, built up an entirely new structure.” Handel’s Water Music in Hamilton Harty’s arrangement as well as Schoenberg’s Chamber Symphony No.2 op.38 serve as the dramaturgical frame of the concert.
