Alessandro (HWV 21)

Alexander the Great was a popular topos in the 17th and 18th centuries. Alexander’s numerous campaigns and amorous escapades provided abundant opportunities for bringing this hero of antiquity effectively to life on the operatic stage. In Alessandro, Handel creates a convoluted plot based on Alexander’s political quest for power and his yearning for love: Alessandro is caught up in a maelstrom of jealousy and desire when for political reasons he feigns love to the Scythian Princess Lisaura, although he loves the Persian Princess Rossane.

At the premiere, Handel offered the London audience a truly stellar cast, the castrato Senesino and the two most famous female singers of the day, Francesca Cuzzoni and Faustina Bordoni. The Festival picks up on this tradition, and with Bejun Mehta, Julia Lezhneva and Sonia Prina presents the classical stars of today.
