Ariodante (HWV 33)

Spellbinding music and an emotively gripping plot are the salient virtues of Handel’s Ariodante. It was the first work that Handel composed for the theatre in Covent Garden, after his contract with the King’s Theatre in Haymarket had expired in mid-1734. The opera still ranks among the composer’s most frequently performed dramatic works. Arias such as “Dopo notte” or “Scherza infi da” belong to the standard repertoire of prestigious singers, and are featured in innumerable recordings. In this special concert version with light design, Emily Fons sings the leading role, after having already sung her way into the Festival audience’s hearts with the title roles in Faramondo and Susanna.
