Publio Cornelio Scipione (HWV 20)
The plot of this opera, which Handel composed in 1726 for the King’s Theatre in London, revolves around the historical figure of Publius Cornelius Scipio and his conquest of Carthage. It tells of the captive Berenice, who is magnanimously granted her freedom by the victorious general Scipio so that she can marry her fi ancé Lucejo.
The story is narrated in stirring recitatives and sublimely embellished arias. The designated Artistic Director of the Göttingen International Handel Festival, George Petrou, is making his debut in Göttingen with his Armonia Atenea ensemble and an array of outstanding singers.
