Cancelled | Alessandro (HWV 21)
Written for the stars
Alexander the Great was an extremely popular choice of main character in the 17th and 18th centuries. His numerous military campaigns and amorous escapades suggested a variety of options for dramatically bringing the ancient hero to life on the opera stage. In Alessandro, Handel recounts the confusion surrounding Alexander’s pursuit of political power and also his quest for romance. Alessandro finds himself caught up in a maelstrom of jealousy and desire when he simulates love of the Scythian princess Lisaura for political reasons, even though he loves the Persian princess Rossane.
For its premiere in London, Handel recruited a star-studded cast that included the castrato Senesino and the two most famous female singers of the time, Francesca Cuzzoni and Faustina Bordoni. The Festival honours this tradition with modern-day operatic stars Bejun Mehta, Julia Lezhneva and Sonia Prina.
