Alexander Balus (HWV 65)
Alexander Balus is one of George Frideric Handel’s victory oratorios. As a sequel and narrative continuation of Judas Maccabaeus, it is unique in Handel’s oeuvre. The libretto is composed of Biblical texts and passages directly quoted from poems by Shakespeare, John Milton and other theatre poets. Musically, it is distinguished by its compositional diversity and remarkable creativity in sound.
