Dramma per musica in three acts by George Frideric Handel
The king is dead! Berengario and Matilde are determined to seize power over Italy at all costs. To this end, they intend their son Idelberto to marry the newly widowed Adelaide. But the proud monarch has long since summoned Lotario, the noble German king, to her aid. The struggle for power begins …
Renowned Venezuelan director Carlos Wagner staged this tension-filled plot as a thrilling chamber drama about love, power and intrigue. Following a semi-staged performance in 2004, the Festival presented for the first time a fully staged production of George Frideric Handel’s opera Lotario at Göttingen’s Deutsches Theater. For the Festival, this constitutes a further milestone on the way to staging all Handel’s operas in Göttingen by 2020.
Coproduction with Konzert Theater Bern
The opera premiere was broadcasted live on NDR Kultur.
