Händel, Almira und die Hamburger Gänsemarkt-Oper

Prof. Dr. Hans Joachim Marx, renowned musicologist, Handel expert and friend of the Festival for many years, has put together a concert programme for Handel’s first stage work Almira. The concert ‘Handel, Almira and the Hamburg Gänsemarkt opera’ begins with the first performance of the first surviving version of the overture to Almira, which only uses lute tablature. Besides the overture, this year’s Stiftungskonzert also combines earlier works that had a defining influence on the opera with later works for whose composition Handel drew on Almira as a source of inspiration. The programme also includes Telemann’s new version of the aria ‘Quillt, ihr überhäuften Zähren’ from Almira.
Abchordis Ensemble joins the soprano Kathrin Hottiger to present this journey through music history. In 2015 the ambitious young artists Abchordis Ensemble won the Göttingen Historical Music Series, which was the precursor competition to today’s göttingen händel competition, and were accepted on the European sponsorship programme ‘eeemerging’. Since then, the ensemble has been at home on festival stages across Europe.

The venue is barrier-free. For further information on Festival venue accessibility. Please see the overview.
