A thread about Ariadne
Sometimes life hangs by a thread. In the case of Theseus, however, it is a ball of woollen yarn that enables the King of Athens’ son to find his way back out of the labyrinth in which he has slain the Minotaur. At the other end of the thread is Ariadne, who is in love with the young hero, and therefore becomes a traitor to her own family. But Ariadne’s affection is somewhat inconvenient, because Theseus has long since fallen in love with her younger sister Phaedra. In André Gide’s story Theseus, the title hero – now grown old – takes an ironic look back at his heroic life and reflects on his boisterous youth.
