Oratorio in three Acts by George Frideric Handel

Joshua is one of the so-called ‘victory oratorios’ through which Handel celebrated in London, in 1746/47, the victory of the Hanoverian dynasty over the troops of the Catholic pretender to the throne, Charles Edward Stuart. Handel hit the nerve of the time with these large-scale works. Although originally as successful as Judas Maccabaeus, Joshua is little performed today and recordings are rare. The Göttingen Handel Festival built the neglected work into its 2014 programme and this recording of the performance under Laurence Cummings makes a clear case for how Joshua can convince and enthuse audiences today.
