Oratorio in three Acts by George Frideric Handel
A remarkable female figure takes centre stage in Handel’s oratorio Susanna. The work dates from the year 1749 and together with Theodora marks a change of direction in Handel’s later creative endeavours. The basis of the oratorio is provided by the Old Testament story of Susanna, as recounted in the apocryphal additions to the Book of Daniel. With reference to this biblical basis, the unknown librettist created a kind of ‘crime story’ about coercion, slander and justice in law – matters of eternal relevance.
