Laurence Cummings: with passion and humour
A heart that beats for Handel, an artist with infectious passion for the music: Laurence Cummings brings extraordinary abilities to the role of Artistic Director. He tackles his conducting, his work as soloist and his teaching with irrepressible enthusiasm. His performances, richly diverse, unite emotionality, sensitivity and stature. Bringing together artists from far-flung places, he radiates inspiration and inspires musicians with creative, sometimes even exotically unconventional ideas – and they love him for it.
Cummings, who is also Director of the London Handel Festival, which he has led since 1999, and is a Trustee of the Handel House Museum with deep insights into Handel research in Britain, spans a bridge – just as Handel did – between Germany and London, a bridge linking artists and Handel devotees in Germany and England. He brings outstanding singers from the London Handel Festival singing competition to Göttingen, and invites the winners of the Göttingen competition series to London, year on year.
A man of humour, Cummings is not merely a musician with exceptional gifts, but also a wonderfully welcome gain for Göttingen as a person, someone who typically cycles each morning to the Goethe Institute and throws himself into learning German. The Göttingen International Handel Festival is fortunate to be able to look forward to witnessing his music-making, his gift for detecting singing talent, and his love of Handel’s music, at least until 2020.
