Berlin 1865
In the Footsteps of Joseph Joachim
As early as the nineteenth century, musicians inspired by the spirit of Romanticism rediscovered their fascination with the long-superseded repertoire of early music. While today’s performances generally strive for historical authenticity and to recreate the sound of the time in which the works were composed, the Japanese Violinist Shunske Sato and pianist Shuann Chai explore how Baroque music was interpreted at the height of the Romantic era. With an authentic concert program from 1865, they follow in the footsteps of Joseph Joachim and Clara Schumann. Joachim, who himself lived for a time in Göttingen, was one of the outstanding violin virtuosos of his age and shared a lifelong friendship with Clara Schumann.
Professor Wolfgang Sandberger will guide the audience through this historical chamber concert, which spans from Tartini’s ingenious Devil’s Trill Sonata to Robert Schumann’s grand Violin Sonata in D minor.
