George Petrou
Grammy-nominated and Echo Klassik-winning conductor George Petrou enjoys an acclaimed international career. He is Artistic Director of the Händel-Festspiele Göttingen and the Armonia Atenea orchestra, with which he performs on both period and modern instruments. Former Music Director of the Greek Radio National Symphony, he studied piano in Athens and London before turning to conducting.
A leading specialist in baroque repertoire, he has conducted at major opera houses and festivals across Europe, Asia, and North America, and worked with orchestras such as the Gewandhaus Leipzig, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, and Munich Radio Orchestra. Petrou also directs staged productions and has signed several acclaimed ones.
His discography includes releases with Deutsche Grammophon, Decca, and MDG. He is an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music and a Chevalier de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
