Gli Schiavoni

Gli Schiavoni ensemble brings together Croatian musicians of the younger generation dedicated to historically informed performances of early music. Following individual studies of early music in Croatia and abroad, they were brought together by a shared desire to explore Croatia’s rich musical heritage, which was deeply intertwined with European musical influences, particularly during the 17th century. The ensemble's name is inspired by the famous Riva degli Schiavoni in Venice, named after the Slavic merchants who moored their ships there during the Venetian Republic and delivered goods from the eastern coast of the Adriatic - a region known as "Schiavonia" in the old Venetian dialect.

Alongside masterpieces of Baroque music composed for voice and basso continuo, Gli Schiavoni seek to bring 17th-century Croatian and European musical heritage closer to audiences, focusing on works that are rarely performed or have never been performed before. Their mission to present this under-explored repertoire in a compelling and fresh manner, as well as to explore the relationships between Croatian and European musical heritage, was recognized by EEEMERGING - a European organization supporting young early music performers. With its support, the ensemble has performed at European early music festivals in Croatia, Serbia, Italy and Spain, and will also perform in Finland in July 2027.
